AI search is the new Google

For twenty years, getting found meant ranking on Google. That race is being run again from the start, on a new track, and this time the field is wide open. The businesses that show up in AI search now will be the ones it recommends for years.

The old way handed you a list to choose from. The new way hands the customer one answer.

The search bar is quietly changing hands

Think about the last time you needed something done and did not know who to call. A few years ago you would have typed a couple of words into Google, scrolled a page of blue links, opened three or four in new tabs, and made up your own mind. More and more, that is not what happens. People open ChatGPT, or they use the AI answer now sitting at the top of Google, and they ask a full question in plain words. Who is the best electrician near me for an urgent job. And instead of a list, they get an answer. One or two names, with reasons. The choosing has already been done for them.

This is not a far-off prediction. It is already how a large slice of the country looks things up, and the share grows every month. So the question for a small business is no longer whether this is coming. It is whether you are one of the names the AI hands over, or one of the many it never mentions.

One answer, not ten links

The difference sounds small. It is not. The old results page was generous. Ten links meant ten businesses got a look, and if you came fourth or fifth you still had a fair shot at the click, because people scrolled and compared. There was room to be a contender.

An AI answer is not generous. It does not show ten of anything. It reads everything it can find, decides who fits the question, and hands back a short list, often a single name, with a sentence on why. There is no page two. There is no scrolling down to find you. Being named is everything, and being merely out there counts for nothing. You are either the answer or you are invisible, and invisible has never been this complete.

Even Google has changed the rules on itself

If you are tempted to sit this out because you already rank well on Google, look at what Google is doing to its own results. At the top of more and more searches there is now an AI summary that answers the question on the spot. The ten blue links still exist, but they have been pushed down the page, beneath a box that often gives people everything they came for without a single click.

By Google's own figures that AI answer now reaches around two billion people a month, and ChatGPT alone is used by roughly eight hundred million people a week. Here is the part that should get your attention. Ranking number one the old way no longer guarantees you a spot in the AI answer sitting above it. That summary is drawn from a wider and different set of signals. The position you spent years earning still counts, but it is worth less than it was, and it no longer puts you first on the page.

Why this is a genuine second shot

Here is the good news, and it is bigger than most people realise. The first race to rank on Google is, for most small businesses, already lost. The top spots were claimed years ago by big franchises, directories and competitors with deep pockets and a long history of links pointing at them. A new operator trying to crack page one for a competitive search today is starting a marathon from the very back, against runners who set off a decade ago.

AI search wipes that board clean. It does not weigh the same things the old race did. It cares less about who has the oldest website and the most backlinks, and more about who states plainly what they do, where they work and who they have helped, in a way a machine can read and trust. Almost no small businesses have done anything about this yet. The field is not just open. It is nearly empty.

It is the closest thing to a do-over that search has ever offered. A second chance to be found, on a track where the head start your competitors paid for no longer counts for much.

Why the early movers win, and keep winning

There is a reason getting in now matters more than getting in eventually. AI leans on the sources it already knows and trusts. When it learns your business early, and learns it cleanly, it starts to reach for your name when the question comes up. Every time it recommends you, that choice is reinforced. The businesses that show up first do not just get an early lead. They become the default answer, and a default is a hard thing to shift.

We have seen this film before. The businesses that took search seriously in its early days, before everyone else caught on, locked in rankings that paid them back for years and made it expensive for anyone to catch up. AI search is at that same early moment right now. In two years every competitor in your suburb will have a site built for this, and the easy ground will be gone. The cost of moving early is small. The cost of being late is watching the channel that is replacing Google recommend someone else.

How we build for it

This is exactly why getting found in AI is the first stage of what we call the Growth Engine. A good website is no longer just something nice to look at. It is the thing the AI reads to decide whether to put you forward. So we build every site to be understood by machines as much as by people, with your services, your area and your proof laid out in plain, readable terms from the very first line of the page. The Engine runs in three stages.

01

Get found

People now ask ChatGPT and Google's AI for a name, not a list of links. Every Propeller site is built to be read and trusted by those answer engines, so you are one of the names they hand over.

02

Win the first glance

Getting recommended only matters if the site they land on earns the call. A fast, modern, credible site turns that visit into a phone call instead of a tap back to the results.

03

Answer the call

When the phone finally rings, it gets answered, by you or by our AI receptionist, so the lead you worked to win never dies in a voicemail or a missed call at 4pm on a Friday.

Get found, win the glance, answer the call. Seal all three and the same suburb, the same trade and the same effort bring in more booked work, because none of it leaks away at the steps most businesses never see.

The window is open now

New channels do not stay wide open for long. There was a moment when claiming a Google listing was a novelty, and the businesses that moved first ran ahead of everyone who waited. AI search is that moment, happening again, right now. The names it learns and trusts this year are the ones it will keep recommending long after the rest of your trade has worked out what happened. The only question left is whose name it learns first.
